IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Tifa Lockhart
Canon: Final Fantasy VII (Remake & Rebirth)
Canon Point: Chapter 12 of Rebirth, following the night in the Gold Saucer right before the fight for the Keystone.
Age: 20
Background: Tifa's remake continuity background, as well as a general page on FFVII Rebirth. The Rebirth sections are not fully complete, so if you need more info, please let me know!
Arrival Scenario: Solvunn
Suitability: As I mentioned in my comment requesting Tifa as a third, I'm interested in Solvunn because it's the territory I have yet to play around in. Having Tifa there would allow me to engage with another part of the game and some characters and players I haven't had the chance to hit up yet, which makes it appealing.
However, I also think Solvunn is a good fit for Tifa. The focus on community and taking care of each other that exists in Solvunn fits Tifa quite well, as she was community-minded while she ran the Seventh Heaven bar in the slums. You see during Remake through her showing Cloud around that she knows everyone in Sector 7 and will often check in on them, and that she was an established and well-known figure within that community. I would like her to work toward a similar role within Solvunn.
Also, while Tifa may have spent about five years in the slums of the massive city of Midgar, her first fifteen years she was a country girl. She knows what rural communities are like and how they function, so I think she'll slot in well.
Plot-wise, she has now been exposed to many supernatural concepts in her canon, including alternate timelines and parallel universes. She's also aware that there is life on planets other than her own (via learning about the Gi and Jenova), and while this has been a lot for her to take in, she wouldn't shy away from engaging with the plot elements of Abraxas. She is an accomplished fighter and not one to stand on the sidelines if she perceives there is some injustice in the world that should be addressed. I don't think she'll be particularly idle or passive while in this setting.
Powers: While Tifa is a normal human with no supernatural enhancements of any sort, the fact that she's in a JRPG means that she is shown to do some pretty over-the-top things in battle, which includes defying gravity. A lot of this is just for the purpose of making cutscenes and the battle system more flashy and fun, so I'm going to assume she can't actually perform some of those more-than-human feats in a more realistic setting.
That being said, Tifa is an accomplished martial artist. She has been trained in Zangan's techniques, which focuses on daily regimens and building up one's body to the point of peak performance. She is extremely disciplined, pushing her body to its limit. For that reason, I would say that her strength, flexibility, speed, etc. is on the level of an Olympic athlete. When it comes to her endurance, she is actually shown to be even above Cloud — an enhanced super-soldier — as she's the one who barely flags when they climb flight after flight of stairs in the Shinra building. Her abilities also imply that she channels her inner chi to strengthen her punches, though again, there is nothing actually supernatural going on, so I'll keep this within the limits of what a human could reasonably do.
While Tifa can cast magic, she can only do this with the help of Materia, which can be slotted into her weapons (her gloves). She won't have access to any Materia in Abraxas, naturally, but I do suspect that if she decides to learn some native Abraxan magic, she'll be able to pick it up fairly quickly because she has a lot of experience with spell-casting.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
The Nibelheim Incident. This is what sent Tifa's life on an entirely new trajectory, as well as set in stone her need for revenge against both Sephiroth and Shinra and ultimately, her joining Avalanche. While her life before this incident was not without strife (such as her mother passing away when she was young and the fallout of that), she was still a fairly normal country girl with fairly normal country girl problems.
Then Shinra and Sephiroth arrived in Nibelheim to investigate reports of monsters appearing around the Nibel Reactor. This led to a string of events where Sephiroth had a mental break, lost his mind, and burned down the entire town. Tifa's father went after him to confront him at the reactor and Tifa followed, leading her to see her father's cut-down corpse. Tifa, only fifteen at the time, also tried to confront the legendary soldier Sephiroth, which ended as you might expect — with her being slashed across the front by his sword, down to the bone, and then passing out.
She woke up halfway around the world in the slums of Midgar, her body weakened despite all the physical training she'd done under Zangan's tutelage, in pain, and with massive medical debt she had to pay off. This led to Tifa having to forge an entirely new life for herself, almost completely on her own, though she eventually meets Jessie, Biggs, Wedge, and Barret, and Avalanche is formed. It's after finding such like-minded people that she truly dedicates herself to fighting back against the Shinra corporation and seeking revenge on Sephiroth when she finds out he's not actually dead.
The Nibelheim Incident and its aftermath is also what led to Cloud's mental break and taking on Zack's persona, leading to a great deal of confusion and uncertainty between him and Tifa, which is still haunting her at her current canonpoint. The Nibelheim Incident is what sends much of FFVII's plot and Tifa's personal story into motion.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Yes, with an emphasis on try. Despite the fact that Tifa joined a terrorist organization, she is the moral center and beating heart of Avalanche, in that she doesn't agree with the more violent and extremist methods that Barret and the others believe to be necessary. She expresses this to Cloud almost as soon as they reunite, describing it as feeling trapped. She wants to make a difference and she does believe that Shinra has committed some unforgivable acts, on top of draining the planet of life to power their Mako reactors, and yet... is blowing up those reactors really the answer when there might be civilian casualties as well?
She does go along with the reactor bombings despite this, but there are many times when she steps in to speak out against violence toward civilians or even Shinra employees who she doesn't see as being the crux of the problem. Plenty of regular people are forced to work for Shinra in order to get by, and so when Barret wants to paint all of them with the same brush, she will often oppose that viewpoint. In reality, both of them have fair and valid points in the argument.
Later on, when Rufus (president of Shinra) tries to propose a truce between them, Tifa alongside Cloud and Aerith gives it due consideration and they are on the verge of agreeing (until Yuffie tries to assassinate him and that bridge is burned). If Tifa can find a peaceful solution rather than a violent one, she will try for it, but she also understands that sometimes there is no other way. She's fought her way through her fair share of Shinra soldiers during her journey, though it's made quite clear that Avalanche doesn't actually kill them unless they're left with no other choice. This is from after her canonpoint, but when she sees Cloud (under Sephiroth's influence) callously cutting Shinra troops down, she's horrified.
To sum it up, she wants the best for the planet and she knows that both Shinra and Sephiroth need to be stopped to save Gaia, but she doesn't want to lose her morals or her soul on that path. She also tries to keep her fellow members of Avalanche on the straight and narrow in this respect, as much as she can.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Passionate people who are not willing to simply accept things as they are, and who want to make the world a better place. Despite all of her misgivings as mentioned above, she joined Avalanche for a reason, and that's because she believes in their ultimate goal of protecting the planet. Sure, a lot of it is also due to her unresolved rage toward Shinra and how they ruined her life, but as she travels across Gaia, she also becomes more and more certain that the planet needs their help.
So people like Barret, Jessie, and the other members of Avalanche who aren't willing to just turn a blind eye to the injustice in the world have earned her respect. Jessie in particular went out of her way to look out for Tifa when she was going through some rough times in Midgar, but also broke contact with her when she believed that her Avalanche activities might endanger Tifa. It was Tifa who made a point of seeking her out after that.
Tifa also admires someone like Aerith, who is able to face even the most difficult parts of their journey with a positive attitude and an upbeat smile. She finds Aerith's seemingly carefree nature admirable and freeing, because Aerith doesn't get hung up on what other people think about her and embraces all parts of life with her arms spread wide. Tifa wishes she could be more like Aerith in that respect.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
To that point about Aerith and how Tifa wishes that she could be more like her, the thing she seems to most dislike about herself is how she's such a people pleaser. She often can't stop herself from wanting to make sure that everyone likes her and that she is palatable to people. She overthinks how she's being perceived by others and how she is presenting herself to them.
As a result, she'll jump to smooth things over or to deescalate a situation. She'll often avoid conflict for the same reason. While there are a lot of valid reasons for why Tifa chooses not to confront Cloud about why there are inconsistences in his memories (doubting her own recollection of events, not wanting to trigger him to have a complete mental breakdown), it could also be argued that to some extent, it's just easier for her to let him continue to live the lie while she tries to figure out what's really going on.
Tifa doubts herself a lot, never sure if she's saying or doing the right thing, and as a result she comes across as reserved and unsure of her own emotions. There's a reason that her last name is Lockhart, and it's not subtle at all. She doesn't always like this side of her, wishing she could be more like Aerith who speaks her mind and doesn't care what others say or think about her. (Or at least, that's how Tifa perceives it.)
What is their sign, and why?
The Empress. Tifa is a nurturing person who is always looking out for others, and it wouldn't be inaccurate to call her the Mom of the group, even though she's only twenty. She had to grow up and mature incredibly fast after the Nibelheim incident, learning how to take care of herself in a world that felt like it was always against her. Yet her instinct nonetheless is to look after other people, whether it's supporting Cloud as he loses his grip on reality (even after he lashed out at her), treating everyone in Sector 7 like her close neighbors, or even running her bar and providing hospitality to its patrons. While Marlene is Barret's daughter, Tifa may as well be her aunt for all that she looks after the young girl.
